Immigration (Do We Realize?)
(June 2006)
All of the discussions that I have seen on the immigration and border control issue have been polarizing and seem to fall into the typical “our side’s right” bumper
sticker mentality that we have in our two party democracy. Do any of us realize what is going on and what the repercussions of our actions could be?
Many immigrants that are seeking citizenship or legal status in the United States are working for low wages, but have no deductions or taxes. If they get their wish
and become documented workers, they will begin to have taxes and other fees deducted from their earnings, which could cut their pay by a third. Do they realize this?
The net income that they would be left with might be insufficient and lead them to seek government assistance. Employers could not afford to offset these new payroll
deductions through wage increases without cutting jobs to accommodate inflated salaries.
Liberals generally seem to be the group most willing to grant citizenship to illegal immigrants. If they get their wish, they will be introducing a new group of
conservatives to the United States. Do they realize this? A large majority of the illegal immigrants come from Central and Latin America. The majority of these
individuals come from devout Catholic backgrounds. Regardless who helped them gain citizenship; a committed Catholic would be reluctant to vote for the party of
abortion and gay rights. Gratitude is short lived when religious heritage enters the situation.
Conservatives are the group most often identified with big business and free trade policies such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Central
American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). These policies have continued to suppress Latino economies and led to an increased number of illegal immigrations to
the U.S. Do they realize this? The income difference between the United States and Mexico is astronomical when compared to other bordering countries around the
globe. U.S. companies lay off domestic workers and open operations in Mexico to take advantage of the low wages. It is in our company’s best interest to keep the
wages in Mexico as low as possible. Illegal immigration will be an issue as long as the wage difference is so wide, no matter how long and tall the walls are that
erect at our borders.
On June 12, 1987 in West Berlin, Germany, Ronald Reagan wowed masses of Americans with his speech that delivered the infamous “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down
this wall!” line. In that same speech he also said that the wall, guards and checkpoints were “an instrument to impose upon ordinary men and women the will of a
totalitarian state”. Do we realize this?
