Katie Couric Just May Be the Perfect Choice
(April 2006)

I don’t understand why there is any concern over who anchors any of the network evening news programs. Is anyone ever home to watch them? Does it matter if it is a
man or a woman? How about a chimpanzee?

Many Americans work a typical 9 to 5 workday and don’t have a prayer of getting home in time to watch the network evening newscasts that all start at 5:30. Usually we
are relegated to about five minutes of national news that is sandwiched between lottery numbers and traffic construction on our local broadcasts.

It doesn’t really matter, though, because the content of these newscasts has been watered down so much over the years. When the national evening news programs
give us their "in-depth" segments, they usually clock in at about three minutes. National newslike programs like "Nightline," which used to provide more in-depth
coverage on current topics, have been watered down into typical news magazine shows. In order for me to find out from my television what is going on in the world, and
even in my own country, I go overseas to the BBC news via PBS, even though it doesn’t tell me about the guy who grew the world’s largest watermelon. I could try CNN,
but I have chosen to not be programmed by cable TV’s 500 stations of banality.

Do we really need to know what is going on around us or should we just use the media to give us traffic reports to get us to work on time and promote the lottery? After
all, it helps us pump more money into a system if we are working consumers and paying extra taxes through the lottery. Maybe a good citizen is not an informed one.

Given the climate of the media in this country, I think Katie Couric is the perfect choice to tell me who Paris Hilton is dating during my national news (if I make it home in
time).
